Jasper comes from the Latin "jaspidem", meaning "speckled stone". Other origins that mean the same thing include the Greek "iaspis" and the Hebrew "jaschpeh", both of which mean "speckled or spotted". This stone is called Dalmatian Jasper for its black spots, like a Dalmatian. Dalmatian Jasper is also known as Dalmatian Jasper and Lamparci Jasper. Jasper has been well known since Antiquity, used to make tools and sharp weapons. This natural stone was used to make talismans and statuettes to protect Greek and/or Egyptian civilizations.
 
Dalmatian Jasper, however, has only recently been discovered.
