Artists, like Michaelangelo, ground the stone to make ultramarine, a much revered colour in those days.In the early Christian tradition, lapis lazuli was associated with the Virgin Mary; her garments are often portrayed in blue, which is "the colour of an empress". Scholars also believe that mentions of sapphire in the bible may have referred to Lapis Lazuli, as sapphire was not known before the Roman Empire.
